Dear Delegates,
Iran would like to congratulate all of its fellow members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) present in the Security Council: Russia, China, enezuela, Afghanistan, Colombia, South Africa, Pakistan, Sudan, and all the others (about whom the Iranian delegation is not aware, yet). It is a great achievement for NAM to have so many member or guest nations within the Security Council, especially now, when a common ground must be found between the developed and developing world on utterly important issues such as the prosecution of Sudanese President Ahmad Al-Bashir, the reform of the United Nations, and the nuclear stand-off involving Iran's alleged plans to develop nuclear weapons.
Bearing in mind NAM's August 21 statement on the Iranian nuclear issue, Iran would like to praise that organization (as well as its individual members) for the utmost clarity and unbiased opinion with which NAM has analyzed the nuclear impasse. It is important that we stand together agaisnt a greater encroachment on the right to develop peaceful nuclear energy, on which the NPT itself places great emphasis. Times are changing, and it has never been more important for the Non-Aligned Movement to stand behind Iran, supportive and continuously coherent in its approach to international deplomatic hotspots.
Iran has been an active party to the Non-Aligned Movement. We plegde to remain so. We understand that current international trends require close cooperation between like-minded states against the the tyranny and oppression of a political system based on the hegemony of a few over many. Iran believes in fair trade and development patterns. The NAM believes in fair solutions to International disputes. Iran is contributing with the Security Council and the IAEA through the implementation of the NPT Safeguards Agreement. The West has tried to shadow the truth round after round of senseless sanctions, which have critically undermined the Iranian economy and worsened the situation of the Iranian population.
Iran wishes to negotiate, not only on the dismantling of its nuclear program, but also on all the other items on the Security Council Agenda. However, negotiations must be fair - not fake. Thus, we call upon the members of the Non-Aligned Movement to create a solid wall of common sense to discuss the Agenda and establish more pragmatic approaches to the pressing ailments of the world.
Best regards!
