Hello Delegates,

Poverty in Africa is a serious issue. Africa includes one of the poorest country in the world. In much of Africa, South of the Sahara, harsh environmental conditions worsen the conditions of poverty.

As time passes the problem gets even worse, and it needs a definate end as soon as possible.

Yes fellow delegates,

Africa is suffering of a a series of serious issues which are leading the country to a red alarm situation.

The number of people living in extreme poverty in sub-Sahara Africa grew from 217 million in 1987 to more than 300 million in 1998.

Africa needs help!

PostSubject: Background on Poverty   Poverty in Africa Icon_minitimeMon Oct 27, 2008 2:24 pm

Poverty in Africa has today, more than ever before, achieved a point of calamity. The years of tyranism and negligent goverments have turned African nations into some of the most deplorable and poor countries. Nearly 50% of the African Saharan population lives below poverty line of these nearly 40% survive with less than one dollar daily. The goverments negligence have also reflected on the decline of basic services efectibilities. Health is practicaly unexistant with Infant Mortality reaching beyond 100 in 1000, literacy rate have reached marks under 37.8% such as in Somalia and security is long gone.

These sad conditions call for an urgent change in the African system and a general improvement upon all nations some of which are acomplishing their goals and shining upon all others.

Salam delegates of Africa !! The country of Afghanistan is deeply concerned about the future of Africa as a whole and it calls upon all nations to aid the countries of Africa seriously, giving it all the possible support: in the end we are all brothers ! The delegate of Afghansiatn would also like to emphasize that solving the problem of poverty in Africa will automatically solve various other issues, including HIV. "Although there are numerous factors in the spread of HIV/AIDS, it is largely recognised as a disease of poverty, hitting hardest where people are marginalised and suffering economic hardship. IMF designed Structural Adjustment Programmes (SAPs), adopted by debtor countries as a condition of debt relief, are hurting, not working. By pushing poor people even deeper into poverty, SAPs may be increasing their vulnerability to HIV infection, and reinforcing conditions where the scourge of HIV/AIDS can flourish." To the delegates of Zimbabwe,
Pakistan completely agrees with your resolution on poverty in Africa, since it is most definately an urgent matter that requires cooperation from the international community in order to be solved. It is a huge concern that more than one billion people in Africa do not have access to clean water; more than 800 million people go to bed hungry every day, and of those, 300 million are children. poverty in Africa results from starvation/famine, land degradation, the HIV/AIDS virus, along with countless other issues. as the delegate of afghanistan stated, if the basic aspects of poverty are solved, other issues such as AIDS may decrease as well.
We need to unite for the sake of our people! cheers

Delegates of Zimbabwe,

Kenya's resolution wills to restore democracy and stability in Zimbabwe. So, the delegates of Zimbabwe should be the first ones in favor of this resolution, since the resotration of democracy is the first step to solve the country's situation. What measures are the delegates planning to do in order to solve this poverty issue?

The delegate would like to state that totally agrees with the comments here posted. As it would also like to emphasize that in Sierra Leone, "Malaria is responsible for the largest number of outpatient cases in our hospitals and community clinics,” "Across the country, malaria accounts for almost 40 per cent of all deaths of children under five. It is a shocking statistic, especially considering that malaria is both preventable and curable.
But pervasive poverty means that theory and practice are worlds apart in Sierra Leone. Most people know that malaria is spread by mosquitoes but few have the resources to shield themselves from the threat. Far too poor to afford insect repellents or screen their houses with mosquito nets, most families simply accept malaria as a potentially tragic part of everyday life.
Decades of war and underdevelopment have also created fertile breeding grounds for the malaria-carrying mosquito – from stagnant water sources in rural villages to sewage-choked canals cutting straight through the poorest parts of the capital."

We have indeed started a partnership with the UNICEF, which is helping decrease the number of cases of malaria, although we STILL need help! Also, it is impossible to help reduce the amount of people dying with deseases if there are no suficient resources!

Again, what are the delegates measures to solve this issue?

Hello delegates,
I totally agree with all the coments. Today about 20% of africa's child are going to die before the age.
About three fourths of poor people in Western and Middle Africa, there is an estimated of 90 million people to be living in rural areas and they depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.
"As a consequence of the AIDS epidemic in Sub-Saharan Africa," one report stated, "it is estimated that more than 18 million people have died to date, of which over 3 million were children. Additionally, more than 25 million adults are currently infected which will result in the continued increase in the number of orphaned children. To date, more than 15 million children have already been orphaned as a result of the epidemic. Another 1 million children are currently infected with the disease."

We delegates of Chad are very concerned about Africa's Future.

It seems that we can link all tragedies which occur in Africa with poverty. Today, 30,000 children will die in Africa, due to malnutrition, AIDS (which was never correctly treated), and no access to clean water.

In addition to the lives that are takken due to lack of clean water, malnutrition and HIV virus, other diseases such as malaria, pneumonia and typhoid fever are killing record numbers as well. And they all kill due to the fact that those children can't have access to a correct and qualified treatment.

A recent study just pointed out that 20% of Africa`s children will die before the age of 5. The causes, stated before, could all be treated and therefore not exist, but due to the extreme poverty of the population, those 20% won`t be able to pay far or even travel to find a place where they can recover. It is astonishing that the people of Africa was left behind, and that outrageous numbers such as all of these already stated exist until today, regarding people in Africa.

Salam fellow delegates!
Afghanistan is please to see all this commitment. The delegate has a really positive feeling about the solvency of the issue. However, the delegate is curious about the actual proposals of the resolution. What are exactly the effective measures that will be taken in order to guarantee the African economical development? Afghanistan is eager for answers. إله يبارك أنت

The delegate of Sierra Leone found a few facts about the issue and would just like to share it:

200,000 child slaves are sold every year in Africa. There are an estimated 8,000 girl-slaves in West Africa alone. (sources: BBC 5 October, 2001 & Anti-Slavery Society)

About 120,000 African children are participating in armed conflicts. Some are as young as 7 years old. (source: Africa Children’s Charter)

Children account for half of all civilian casualties in wars in Africa. (source: Africa 2015)

One in six African children dies before the age of five. Most of these deaths could be prevented. (source: Africa 2015)

Nearly one third of children in Sub-Saharan Africa are underweight. (source: UNICEF)

In sub-Saharan Africa, measles takes the life of a child nearly every minute of every day. An effective measles vaccine costs as little as $1 per child. (source: UNICEF)
